If you look at the Calendar of Events page, you will notice something new. Memphis UMC will be hosting a Dave Ramsey class called “Financial Peace University.” As the posters you will begin to see around town say, “Financial Peace University” is a 13-week, video-based small group study that teaches families how to beat debt, build wealth, and give like never before.
Many people have already heard of Dave Ramsey, an expert on personal finance, who bases his advice on biblical principles. In addition to his many books, Dave Ramsey hosts a radio program, and has his own show on FOX Business Network. His no nonsense, common sense and hard work approach has helped millions of people become debt-free.
According to Dave Ramsey, “Obviously, the past year or so has been a challenge for many families. Many have lost their homes, lost their jobs, and even worse, lost their hope. The good news in all of this, though, is that the recession made a lot of people take a good, hard look at how they handle their money. And what a lot of those people saw wasn’t very pretty.”
“If the downturn made you pay attention to your money for the first time in your life, then that’s a blessing – even if it came with some pain. Pain is like that, you know. Sometimes it just seems to hurt for no reason; other times, however – perhaps more often than we’d like to think – pain can be helpful. It is instructive. It show us where we’ve gone off track and points us back in the right direction. That’s always a good thing.”
“So don’t be afraid of the pain. Face it. Deal with it. See what it’s showing you. Correct the problems it is highlighting in your life. Clean up the messes it is uncovering. The economy won’t be bad forever. Use this period to turn your life around.”
